Partridges

Once during a walk in torrential rain
We disturbed small covey of partridges:

They broke at once from beneath our feet
In chorus of wingbeats and windswept cries

Setting rain-slicked backs to teeth of gale
Scattered through murgh of atrocious field.

Now out bright window . . . there they all are!
Winter morning reprise on the farmhouse wall.
